Question 1: Who is Fiona Ghosh?

FG: Fiona is a Partner at Addleshaw Goddard’s Commercial Group, specialising in complex commercial arrangements, particularly in the financial services sector where she has focused her practice for more than a decade. Fiona heads our FinTech Group and has been heavily involved in bringing new payment solutions to market, including ApplePay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. She is an appointed expert on the editorial board of the Payments & Fin Tech Lawyer journal.

Question 2. What do you enjoy most about your job and what do you find most difficult?

FG: The interaction of specialist teams and the intellectual and practical challenges presented in a fast changing market. Balancing the demands of a professional career with a young family.

Question 3. As a female (young)leader or a woman working in the financial sector, what has been the most significant barrier in your career so far?

FG: Self belief when I most needed it!

Question 4. What is the best piece of advice given to you? Who gave you that advice?

FG:  A tutor at Oxford once told a group of us students to be sure that whatever you do, be pure. Don’t play and think about work and vice versa. It’s a huge amount more difficult to do in practice!

Question 5. Who inspired/inspires (role model) you and why?

FG: Any woman who has the guts to speak to the truth, especially in the world we live in.

Question 6. When you began your career (many) years ago, did you ever imagine that you would be a (young) leader in a male-dominated profession?

FG: Does any woman?

Question 7. What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership especially in the financial sector?

FG:  I don’t think it’s as simple as saying there is a single, large reason. Its complicated but wholly achievable.

Question 8. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders in financial sector? And what do you think will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you?


Question 9. Mentorship? What is your opinion about it? Is it necessary? Does it make a difference? Did you have a mentor when you started your career? Do you think it would have made a difference if you did?

FG: I have relied heavily on female leaders in the workplace for guidance and their time, it’s vital to have a sponsor and to build your network in all directions.

Question 10. When it comes to gender pay gap, diversity and inclusion in financial sector: are we progressing, moving backwards or stagnated? Why?

FG: Two steps forward, one step back…or is it the other way around??!

Question 11. What is some of the advice you can share with (young) women entering a male-dominated profession such as tech or finance?

FG: Be passionate about what you do – work is such a large part of your life that being miserable all the time is just not worth it.

Question 12. If you could do it all again, what would you do differently?

FG: Worry less, enjoy more. But that’s the beauty of hindsight!
